Query: What computer language should I teach myself next? I'm leaning toward Perl, but Lua might be a good candidate, too. It might be an interesting challenge to teach myself a functional language, like Haskell or one of the Lisp languages. It might also be cool to delve more deeply into a declarative language, like XSL transforms. I know SQL, but having another one under my belt might be nice.

What do you guys think?

Learn Visual C if you don't know it already. It lets you write functional programs and other things faster, without worrying too much about GUI. I kind-of know Visual Basic, because I hate pointers and the like, but you might think basic is stupid.

Did you mean: C#? AF definitely knows some C/C++.
I can certainly recommend C#, if you want to make dotnet programs. It's nice that once you know C#, you can program Silverlight, asp.NET, XNA, and even xbox.

Can I not do that with VB.net, for which I was a professor's assistant at one time?

I know that it can be used for asp.net, but I don't know about the other stuff.

Not at all! I love VB and VB.net! They're fun! They tie in directly to MS Office! You can do all sorts of stuff with VBScript! I'm just looking for something new.

I'll have to do some research on whether VB.net can do Silverlight or XBox. What is XNA? Never mind, I just looked it up.

Edit: VB.net can do Silverlight, and it can do XNA for the PC, but not for XBox 360, at least not as of when this blog was written.
