As I understand it, and I may be wrong, in UK English, "cheque" is the piece of paper that you pretend is money, while "check" is "verify".

Edit: Interesting. The Wiki article for a cheque/check was apparently not written by an American (or at least heavily edited by a non-American).

In standard American English, "cheque" does not exist. They're both spelled "check" and pronounced identically. I believe they are also pronounced identically to each other in British English. "Czech" is also pronounced the same way.
