I need some help with my homework

Post by Froggychum » Mon Aug 26, 2019 3:44 pm

Okay, so there is something confusing me...

If the store is 5 kilometers away, and the average human walking speed is 5 kilometers per hour, then why has it taken my dad 10 years to come home?

taking in the effects of smoking we can do an equation as such to see the 'due date' of the subject:

the average male life expectancy for men is 80 years in my country (canada) but they say each cigarette shortens your lifespan by 7 to 11 minutes, so let's get the average, that would be 9 minutes per ciggy. Now, my dad left 10 years ago, and I'm 16, so I would have been 6. When I was born he was 12, so he would have been 18 when he ran away. Therefore, if I'm now 16, it's been 10 years since he was 18, so he is currently 28.

So, that means he has precisely 52 years left in his life, not counting cigarettes. cigarettes (apparently) come in packs of 25. Therefore, if he was going out for a 'pack of cigarettes' that would mean he was planning on removing (25 * 9 = 225) minutes from his life, or 3 hours and 45 minutes from his life. Cigarettes are very expensive here, so the average pack is 13 canadian dollars.

Now, he clearly would have moved to america, because the canadian government would have tracked him down by now, so buying his cigarettes from canada would now cost him less, since he's buying with USD. This means, he would only need to pay $9.78 per package of cigarettes. Statistically speaking, he would have moved to a city with a high immigrant population, namely Miami, Florida which is a nice place to chill while being a fugitive. The minimum wage in Miami is $8.25 each hour of work. Now, what hours would my dad be working? That's a whole other equation.

Technically speaking, he has very little chance to get a better job than minimum wage, and he probably works absurd hours both because he is a foreigner. However, he likely would have gotten (and been stuck with this job/line of work) this job when he was a teenager, meaning it's unlikely that he woke up early every day, because of the circadian rythym. Therefore, it's safe to assume that his job cannot begin until 11 am, because there is no way for a teenager to scientifically wake up before 10 am (also known as the double digit time of day). We still know he needs to be working more than an average 9 to 5, because that's reserved for normal american humans, not immigrants. That is 8 hours of work each day, clearly he would need to work at least 10, possibly 12... But working 12 hours each day is likely to attract some suspicion and raise some red flags with the people who believe in human rights for outsiders of the country. We know that clearly has not occured yet, because my father is still MIA or missing in action. Therefore, he likely work 11 hours each day with a 1 hour smoking break. So that's a job that lasts from noon to 11 pm at night, with a smoking break from 5 to 6 pm. This means he gets payed $8.25 for 10 hours of work

Therefore, every work day my father makes $82.50 USD. Clearly, he needs to spend the 9.78 every day which would actually round up to 9.80 because pennies are no longer in circulation (at least in canada, where he is buying them). He surely needs a new pack every day for his smoking break, along with another one for the rest of the day. Weekends he surely would be low on cash, so that means he likely just smokes alot, meaning let's say 2.5 packs on average per weekend, which is 5 per week. Therefore, 5+5+5 packs is 5*3 or 15 packs of cigarettes every week. He only makes $412.50 per week. So, he would be spending 15 * 9.80 = 147 dollars on smokes every week, which is equal to 35.6 percent of his income!!!

Multiplying his weekly salary by 4 we get 1650 dollars per month, or an average of 19800 dollars per year, just shy of 20 000 per year. This salary likely means he is incapable of having a nice place to live or a car, so we can assume he lives in substandardized housing and lives a miserable life of boredom and wanting.

So, if every year he smokes 52 * 15 packs of cigarettes, that would be 780 packs per year or 19500 cigarettes every year!!

Now, the big math!

9 minutes per cigarette equals 175500 lost minutes of life each year, which if we divide it out we get approximately 122 days lost every year, or almost exactly a third of his life lost every year... Therefore, we can cut down the 52 years we assumed he had left. But actually, we need to start from where he started this lifestyle, which was around the time when he left me to go get cigarettes.

If a man lives to be 80 en average, and he left me when he was 18, then he would have had 62 years left to live and regret his mistake but actually, he will have far less now. 62 divided by 3 is about 21 years... But he has already uses 10 of those. Meaning he only has about 11 years left to live.

Okay, so now I have answered your questions: how much time do we have: 11 years maximum, not counting for bad environment and overwhelming stress he surely experiences, so we likely only have a few years to solve this problem.

Okay, so what I need you to figure out is this: "When is dad coming back?" i've only managed to give you background information, but I have no real answer for the question that I need to solve for my homework! PLease hElp mE!

I suppose you could try and run a 'Dadathlon' which is to run to the store, do some lung exercises (equivalent to smoking) and then dash to Miami Florida faster than a speeding cop car...

but besides that it's just math lmao
