Endoplasmatic reticulum

Post by atomtengeralattjaro » Tue May 06, 2008 8:48 pm

The endoplasmic reticulum or ER is an organelle found in all eukaryotic cells that is an interconnected network of tubules, vesicles and cisternae. The lacey membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum were first seen by Keith R. Porter, Albert Claude, and Ernest F. Fullam in 1945. These structures are responsible for several specialized functions: Protein translation, folding and transport of proteins to be used in the cell membrane (e.g., transmembrane receptors and other integral membrane proteins), or to be secreted (exocytosed) from the cell (e.g., digestive enzymes); sequestration of calcium; and production and storage of glycogen, steroids, and other macromolecules. The endoplasmic reticulum is part of the endomembrane system. The basic structure and composition of the ER membrane is similar to the plasma membrane.

Very good, sir!

I saw the happy fish but he's all mixed in with everyone else which is probably why he's happy! The other fish is all lonely!

that's probably because that one is a bacteria in the endoplasmatic reticulum.

You're probably right. What's the yellow in the right corner? And why isn't there more green?!

Color blind!

It's like the sun is peaking in from the right.

Ahh, the shadow looks like a pencil line.

are you stating that the ER membrane has qualities of plasma?

plasma is ANOTHER ONE OF THE 4 BASIC ELEMENTS:
solid
liquid
gas
plasma
i think... :? that's what this 12th grader said to me...

it is true.
but it's like a jelly thing that is somehow between liquid and solid, i think.
(I'm a 13th grader :P)

but I've never really studied these things, just had fun on the lessons so I'm never sure of physics..
