It's probably a multiple of something or has to do with the length of a page.

'cause a byte are 8 bits, 8 bits can represent 256 numbers: from 0 to 255...

255 is FF in hex, it's the largest number you'll see for a lot of stuff. I don't think I need to explain what hex is but now you know why most stuff is 255 in a lot of stuff. It's a decent number and saves just that little bit of space in coding.
