yes it is, it's not beta anymore. Alpha is after all the testing and base work aka beta. I tried getting a server going but no such luck yet

edit: i think i've got it almost ready. do we want monsters and animals and what's the person cap?

no monsters for a little bit to get ready for them, and i'd set player cap at 8 to begin just to see how it does. imo

ok, np. the current url is http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?serve ... port=25565 but it seems like minecraft is busy atm. how will i change it to a regular kind of url?

it did say 'you cannot connect to the server with this url anymore' or something, and i tried to start the server itself with a command but this is what it said:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/mojang/minecraft/server/MinecraftServer

and i have no idea what that means.

edit: I had to drag minecraft_server.jar into my terminal before i put that in but then it denied me permission, does anyone know anything about giving permissions on a Terminal? and i even logged in as the root user but it still denied my permission

What's up? I got it set uo no problem, my computer just couldn't handle it. You download the software, keep on your desktop or somewhere easily accessable, run it and then tell everyone the IP (secretly so you don't get greifers or people stealin ya netz)

It's the same game, just a different stage before release. It recently got a whole lot of new stuff though, including squid.

it's not beta it's alpha. It is now out of it's testing phase and goes into more polish and extra bits like paint, and new animals. The inventory is now server side instead of playerside, meaning if you change computers and re download the game you dont start all over inv wise anyway. For all info on updates and stuff
