I've always wondered that!

Because it seems [at least to me] that americans use "a couple of" even though it's more than two they're counting

I, as an example of an American, use "a couple of" for "two," with the implication that I'm not sure about the exact number. If I think it's 3-5-ish, I'll use "a few."
