An audible bass line throughout the entire song...i'm pretty sure thats one of those things you need throughout an entire piece of music. That would be rule number 1 in my head.

A bass line is completely optional. Sometimes a choir will go into unison a Capella for effect.

Re: So... now Ima 'musician'
Choral composing is a different kind of composing then instrumental composing (in some music there are actually two different specialties). And even when one or more singers starts a Cappella one or more of the singers will take the place of the bass line (the bass voice...)
For bands or orchestras (such as a jazz band, pep band, concert band, etc.) you lose that bass line the entire thing will fall apart. Trust me...it's not pretty.

Re: So... now Ima 'musician'
As a critic, you are allowed to think whatever you like about the rules of music, i will not argue about that.
But if you're playing music, you should be able to dismiss all of those preconceptions, and just play. (When it turns out to be bad, then you just throw it out.)
Look at progressive, avant-garde music. Look at any innovative music, even from a hundred years back. All progression in music, everything that ever changed music, was based on people bending the rules. Of course we need rules, but they can't and shouldn't be interpreted as unbreakable, never.
Of course if you're talking about a band that makes a living by playing generic music, for example on weddings or w/e, it's important for them to stick to the playbook. Also, if you want to make your music very popular, you'll need to stick to the rules that make music easily digestable, catchy, etc.. But when you're actually creating real music, from the heart, to express feelings, to delve deep, to make something real.. then there are no absolute rules.

Re: So... now Ima 'musician'
As a choral bass singer, I know that's not always the case. For example, whenTHEBOMB12321 wrote:And even when one or more singers starts a Cappella one or more of the singers will take the place of the bass line (the bass voice...)
The basses would likely be singing at a tenor range. Or how about when the music drops off and a soloist is allowed to do their thing for a few measures, completely disregarding anything else. All other musicians are essentially on a rest with a fermata. This exists in both choral and instrumental music. You may not like the lack of the bass line, but that doesn't mean that it's essential to have one, or uncommon to not have one.Anonymously Famous wrote:a choir will go into unison a Capella for effect.
