Re: Discussion thread [Serious]
On the "Marriage Equality" or "Defense of Marriage" debate in 'MURIKA (the name of the debate changes depending on which side you take), a big battleground is California. You may have heard of "Proposition 8" - a voter-approved referendum that effectively denied same-sex couples the legal right to marry in California (although in California it gets really complicated because it's a "community property" state, which essentially means in certain circumstances you can be married even if you're not married - a long discussion for another time). Recently, a federal court in California ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. A well-known gay screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (best known for writing the movie Milk - a great film about arguably the most famous gay rights activist in history) took the transcripts from the court proceedings of the Proposition 8 case and turned it into a theatrical production, called "8." This past weekend, Rob Reiner (famous movie director) and a group of Hollywood superstars (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jane Lynch, Martin Sheen, Kevin Bacon, and others) put on a production of the play "8" that was broadcast LIVE on YouTube. The recording is available to view and I will post it below.
The play's point of view is from the plaintiffs of the case (the case was Perry v. Schwartzenegger, where the plaintiff - the Perry Family - sued the State of California, claiming that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional) so is very much skewed towards those who feel homosexuals should be allowed to marry, but is still rather informative on the specific legal and moral issues around the question of Marriage Equality/Defending Marriage.
It is about 90 minutes long (it doesn't begin until about the 30 minute mark) but here it is if you want to watch a bit of it:

Re: Discussion thread [Serious]
There's something to be said for some age discrimination, especially when it can be linked to periods of physical development.
Example: Several drugs, even over-the-counter painkillers, should not be given to children under the age of 12. This is not because the children are less capable of feeling pain, but because they are small enough that the medications would have too acute of an effect on them.
Other cases of age discrimination have to do with a perceived lack of experience. In some cases, it makes sense. This lack of experience, combined with hormone fluctuations caused by changes in teens, may mean that the teenage years are not a time for someone to make a life changing decision.

It depends. My folks had a rule of no dating until 16. Even then, no serious dating until after high school. I got the fun of the school dances without a lot of the teen romance drama. It was great.

Re: Discussion thread [Serious]
So..
it turns out I want to support the TV shows I like. Problem is: Netflix isn't avaiable here (why on Earth, I'll never understand),
and I don't want to do any of the following:
(There could even be a short non-skippable commercial right before i'm allowed to watch an episode, i could live with that.)
I also do not want to pay a lot. DVDs usually cost a lot. And they are usually only out a lot later than the season airs. Meh. I want to pay small prices. I think (i hope) there are lots of people like me who pirate shows simply because it's the most convenient way and/or the only way they can acquire them, but they'd pay if there were a suitable method with reasonable prices.
Opinions? Does this equal to netflix? Does any of you know of a similar option that is avaiable worldwide?
To the creators of Fringe, Game of Thrones, Sanctuary, Dexter, Leverage, White Collar, Luther, and even goddamn Terra Nova and Falling Skies:
(oh god i'm such a nerd. why do i even watch so many shows?! (not at the same time though (but only because i dont have that many screens (jk))))

and I don't want to do any of the following:
- pay for HBO just for one show
- watch stuff when it airs (I prefer to watch them well.. just about any other time, whenever I feel like it)
- miss episodes because I (unpredictably) can't be at the TV at a specific time
- watch hungarian-dubbed versions of english speaking shows (terrible), cut into parts by commercials (even more terribler)
- just watch TV in general
- buy a DVD of a season that i've already seen (for the extras, i can just go to youtube)

Re: Discussion thread [Serious]
Netflix is a monthly fee, not per episode, but that's essentially what it does.
Have you tried Hulu? They don't have everything, but they have several shows. The free version has commercials and not as many shows. I'm not sure if the payed version has commercials, but I do know that it has more shows.

Well, that's just wonderful, isn't it?
I do know that Netflix is currently expanding to other countries. They currently have a blog for Brazil, Spanish-speaking Latin America, and the UK and Ireland. Perhaps they will eventually make it to you? I have had contact with some Netflix employees regarding their expansion into other locales. Maybe I can ask if they have plans to expand further into Europe.

I think they do have plans, but they can't just jump into it, as I understand there are lots of things to work out when expanding to a country, which kinda sucks. I guess i'll just have to wait then, well, not my loss, i'll just continue getting stuff for free..

Re: Discussion thread [Serious]
I don't watch TV anymore. As far as I'm concerned, they were douches for cancelling my accidentally free cable.
