That was just a first "dont ban my bot" post. I cant' get him to make posts from code yet sadly :/Shai'tan wrote:Dicebot works!
It's a common interest, programming.

Ah, okay. So far so good at least.

To be fair, this thread was about how to do D&D on a forum. Using programming to do the dice rolls was bound to come up eventually.assdef wrote:Why must every thread in this forum somehow become a programming thread?

Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
I actually try to learn a new programming language every once in a while. It's interesting. I don't usually get into it any more than the basics, but sometimes I really get into it (here's looking at you, Python).

So then, are there 4 brave adventurers who want to try this now that we have a bot?

Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
How often are we going to be expected to log in to check, etc.?
Also, if I do this, if someone would give me a URL that will help me with a character sheet, skills, etc., that would be great. I'm still pretty much a D&D n00b.

I would love to join, but I'm going to be very short on time from next week. The family is coming back, uni starts up, I have a coding project with a friend and I'm trying to DM for a group of friends

Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
This would be a sloooow play I think. I'd only periodically check between 11am and 5 pm, M-F most likely, while I'm at work, maybe on the weekends if I'm not busy, just to do dice rolls, and reactions, but major DM Posts would wait till my lunch break.
To make sure it doesn't get too out of hand I'd likely want to try to limit people posting back and forth too much like in our normal rp's. Something like "it's not a rule but try to limit your characters actions to what they would be able to do in 10 mins" so you could have a good conversation with people. The other thing I'd probably want to speed things up is buffer conversations. If you are talking with an NPC probably jsut ask all your questions that you can in one post, and he'll answer them like you were talking back and forth. Stuff like this. I have a few ideas and am open to new ones, but that's if enough people want to play.
I can send you to resources too Shai's week sounds busy but fun and like my DM irl... sneaky sneaky Shai.
Basic E5 Rulebook, from WotC
Character sheets, from WotC
1. Click the "Fifth Edition Character Sheets"
2. Use the "DnD_5e_CharacterSheet - Form Fillable.pdf" in the folder you get from that link.
Handy Videos!Probably watch Video 3, 6, and 7 at the very least. You can build a class along with the guy (those videos are EXTREMELY HELPFUL), and if you made a magic person watch video 9.
IF we get any interest, or you guys think i should try it anyway (I know you're busy Shai but we can wait. We would love to have our ninja) This info will go into the intro of the campaign too.
1. Even though I don't know them all, try to know the rules well, things like knowing exactly how combat damage, and attacks are calculated. Grapple, prone, steps of a turn.
-everything else is in the book feel free to look it up.
2. If you and your players dont like a mechanic, change it. You're the DM what you say goes!
3. Try not to tell your players no, but warnings are nice. If your player wants to do something let them, but if it'll get them most likely killed feel free to warn.
4. VOICES! Get into NPC character. Even if the voices aren't good at first, you'll get better (Speaking from hours and hours of experience, more on that when a particular mod launches)
- Voices make each npc unique and have personality. It makes it easier for your players to remember them and talk to them in character.
5. Uh... here's tips from someone more informed

I never answered this! I've only dm'd once, and am still doing that one.Shai'tan wrote:Funny you should mention it, I just recently encouraged my friends to play again. First session will be in late august, but I'm going to have a warm-up session tomorrow!

Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
Thanks for the links! I'll try to look at them soon. I have to prepare the university class that I'll be teaching starting in September, so that might be a time drain that I hadn't really considered...
I am interested, though. I just need to find a way to better budget my time.

Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
THis is something I want to try and accomodate for, which is where hopefully people taking turns with short things will help. If you only have to read at most 4 posts, that are a few sentances each, then reply. I dont think that'll take up toooo much time.Anonymously Famous wrote:Thanks for the links! Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
You're probably right about that. If we can format it in such a way that it's kind of slow moving, easy going, it should be fine.

Actually it'd go to the Roleplay. We're still planning so technically it's not a roleplay yet, it's still a discussion of the general flavor.assdef wrote:Ship it off to the Games forum, people. Thank you.
Re: Dungeons and Dragons!
Game. (gām) noun. A form of play or sport, especially a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.
You roll dice; ergo, it is a game.

I put it in roleplay I used to be one of the two roleplay mods afterall.Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and first published in 1974
