Re: The Youtube Thread
Random rant (but it ties in to "cool," so it kind of fits):
A friend posted something about something being so hot that it had to be measured in Kelvin.
Now, I haven't been in a science class in a really long time, but I remembered that 0 Kelvin is defined as absolute zero - the temperature at which there is no molecular motion. So anything hot measured in Kelvin would be a really, really high number. Celsius would make a lot more sense when measuring something that's hot.
The joke would make a lot more sense if it said that something was so cool that it had to be measured in Kelvin.
Rant over.

Re: The Youtube Thread
Anything can be measured in anything...It would make sense if maybe cool as double digits in kelvin or something.
In which case it would be long winded and not really that cool to say in the first place.

Re: The Youtube Thread
temperature units are so arbitrary, it's really annoying that we have several. I mean for properties like length and volume it's understandable for people to want to tie them to something they can imagine, like feet or cups or whatever, but you can't really imagine temperature that precisely anyway. Celsius is great because you can imagine ice and boiling water easily, and kind of extrapolate from there. But when talking about extreme temperatures it doesn't really matter, it will always just be a number that's vastly different from what you're used to. Who cares how many digits is it?

They should measure temperature with numbers of chili peppers like they do on restaurant menus

idk use ice cubes or something.
In fact we should just use hieroglyphics for everything. Like emojis and such

Eventually our keyboards are going to start having fewer and fewer keys, letters replaced by emojis, as we slowly return to cave dweller level of communication.

tried posting emojis and getting that error?
fullwidth characters are ok though apparently.

Silly humans. Need to have everything neat and organized. Let's measure the temperature! Let's keep track of time! Bah, who cares. If you're cold, put a sweater on.

Yes, but the joke saying it was so hot it had to be measured in Kelvin made less sense, since it's zeroed in on zero. Or something.ThingerDudes wrote:Anything can be measured in anything...

How come nobody has achieved absolute zero yet? Is zero molecular motion even possible? If absolute zero is just a theory, how do you measure it? Basically if nobody has has achieved absolute zero, how do we know what it is?Anonymously Famous wrote:Random rant (but it ties in to "cool," so it kind of fits):

Re: The Youtube Thread
Pretty sure it's just a theoretical thing with 0 thermal energy and the behaviours are just what we think it will be based on the current model and understanding of stuff. idk man I'm not a temperature scientist.

Re: The Youtube Thread
People can measure how much molecular motion something has, and they can extrapolate the linear graph to where absolute zero would be. But even if it were possible to achieve absolute zero, the measuring of it would give the molecules energy.Uly wrote:How come nobody has achieved absolute zero yet? Re: The Youtube Thread
why is science so hard, why can't you just put the molecules under your supermicroscope and watch them as you cool them and then you may need to put a coat on, and then you'd just see them not moving anymore. Right? Right?

Re: The Youtube Thread
Pretty much. The act of observing it adds a minute amount of energy to the mix, which throws off the absolute zero. I hear they've gotten pretty close, though. Here's a useful link!
