ASDF Help Thread. [Serious]
Re: ASDF Help Thread. [Serious]
Requiring someone to show an ID card at the time of voting could be seen as a form of voter suppression. Poor people can't afford to obtain IDs, or the locations to get an ID aren't necessarily accessible (e.g., you live in a rural area and have to drive to a city to get an ID, but don't have a car). A registration process allows citizens to get assigned to specific voting districts without having to pay for or obtain an ID.
US elections are on Tuesdays because of farmers in the 17th Century. It was never updated to something convenient like the weekend because A) weekend days are held sacred in some religions so having a vote then when, for examples, orthodox Jews can't conduct business on Saturdays, would violate religious freedom, B) people in this country hold tradition in way to high esteem, as if voting on a Tuesday is a religion in and of itself, and C) making it harder for working class citizens to vote by only voting on a week day drives down voter turnout, which works to the advantage of one of the major US political parties.
Let me be absolutely clear that none of these reasons I feel are good reasons. But you asked why a Tuesday, and I have answered.

Don't you think you are over complicating something as simple as just referring to me? Why are you like this? Is it just out of boredom? Does your religion require it? You could just assume them and skip all this paragraph, don't worry an eldritch horror won't appear out of nowhere to eat you (or me for that matter) if you get this wrong, the worst that can happen is I ignore you and even in that case you can try again! There shouldn't be that many options anyway so if you get it wrong the first time try again and again. Bottom line is: you just lost a bunch of time reading this paragraph for something as trivial as figuring out how to refer to me when you could just have deduced it which should make you think your life choices so far.

In Mexico you are required to show your ID to vote.assdef wrote: ↑Thu Oct 25, 2018 12:38 amRequiring someone to show an ID card at the time of voting could be seen as a form of voter suppression. Mexican districts are defined by postal code (as far as I know there is no gerrymandering) and when you reach 18 years old (that moment you become a citizen formally) you have to go to the offices of the voting institution of your district to acquire your voting ID (because of this your voting ID is enough to prove you are old enough to drink or to identify yourself when boarding a plane for example).
When you elections come you can vote only at the polls located in your district ONCE. If you change your address you need to get a new ID or go vote to your old district.
Fun fact, mexican drivers license cannot be used as ID in general.

Re: ASDF Help Thread. [Serious]
What questions should I set for the forum to ask on registration?
There is a question/answer thing that will ask a random question and each can have a set of accepted answers, to prevent spammers from registering.
There is a new influx of spammers lately and the current set (which isn't very good) doesn't seem to help at all now.
(Captcha images are just broken, and I don't want to use google AI training crap or basically anything that would send data to third parties.)
So, any suggestions welcome!

Re: ASDF Help Thread. [Serious]
I guess the best thing to do would be to ask something that a bot couldn't do...
So, like, you could ask "What is the sixteenth word on the en.wikipedia page for '[Random thing]'"
Though, that would probably make a lot of possible new users lose interest in registering...
Maybe ask a question like "What color is this image" followed by a colored square or smth
I don't really know I'm kind of tired, but definitely avoid asking math questions or things that a bot could gather from present information (from what's in your question to the page it displays on)
Then again... that might be unncessarily high security for a web forum... maybe just have them solve a quick puzzle. it's no less annoying than captcha... maybe just common riddles, or have them solve an acronym or smth

Yeah, I tried to have some unique questions but they were kinda bad and apparently easily broken...
Actually for now I've decided to add a "sortables captcha" plugin, it makes you sort two columns of things by dragging. I've added some options, you can see this also in the contact us form.

Re: ASDF Help Thread. [Serious]
Two ways to do that, depending on where the image is. If it's on your device, you'll need to upload it to the internet first. It can be directly to the forum, or an external site (like imgur.com). If it's already online (like a link to an image you found somewhere), then you can link it with the tags, like so, using this button on the posting page helps add the tags:
So just put the link between the img tags, like this:
But if you want to upload directly to the forum, you can attach images to the post. I see you've already figured that one out in your music thread, but I'll put this here anyway (and I've updated my explanation in the art forum announcement thread for posterity):
To upload an attachment:
When you're posting, there is an "Upload attachment" tab right under the text area where you type. It's easy to find. Click that, browse for the file, click "Add the file", and then don't forget to click "Place inline".
After this, the following code will appear in the textarea:
Just place that code wherever you want in your post, or leave it where it is, and click submit.
I made a gif of this process a while ago, here it is:
Code: Select all

An idiot brother trying to fix his mistake
I swear this is not spam or a scam, which I know isn't a great way to start a post especially by a member that has just made an account, but please hear me out. About a year or two ago I setup my little sisters new Windows 10 computer and myself being some arrogant privacy loving programmer made her a Microsoft account with an email (can you guess) set to [email protected], she then set a pin and either me or her set a password, she had used the pin for logging in ever since, and we both long lost/forgot whatever password it was. Normally recovering passwords is a fairly trivial matter, being the household tech nerd I do once or twice a year. But at some point in the past, however many years ago, Microsoft in their infinite wisdom enabled disk encryption by default... Yeah and it used the password we all lost. And this MS account has only ever been used for logging in with the pin and never anywhere else.
Look I diverse every bit of ridicule and take full responsibility for the blame, but she shouldn't have to suffer the consequences of my actions. She will be fine, being currently at university most of her mission critical stuff is thank goodness backed up on the school Onedrive, but a lot of research is bottled up and all our photos together from the past laptop. And I know you must get these requests often (I've seen the text on the asdf website), but I would feel like the worst person in the world if I didn't try every avenue.
So I'm here, having tried everything; resetting the password with an external boot drive didn't work (obviously), the forgot email recovery page won't work, because I must of put some random name and address, and MS support automatically closed my ticket, and we've tried every password imaginable. I am well aware that I can't prove that we are the accounts or the laptops owner, if we could we wouldn't be in this mess. But after everything, here I am writing a wall of text, at 11:53 in the night, trying the last thing I can to make things right.

Hi!
Wow, uhm...
First of all, this site (asdfforums.com) is no longer under the same management as asdf.com, so I can't help you there.
And as the email section on asdf.com says:
As for your windows 10 issue, are you sure you actually need that microsoft account? I mean, if you still have all the important data, and the windows installation key, you could maybe do a backup on an external drive, format the hard drive and reinstall of the system, and just don't provide any microsoft account for windows (you don't need to, that step can be skipped. I know microsoft pushes it hard, and it always looks like it's mandatory, but last I checked it still wasn't, so I always just skip it.) And just set a normal "local account" with a password.

So I'm pretty sure that there is no inbox for any @asdf.com email address, it just doesn't get delivered anywhere. You would never guess how many people use [email protected] (or some variant form) as a filler email address across the Internet. Opening up @asdf.com lets in hundreds of email messages a day pertaining to porn site registrations, real audio downloading, mailing lists dealing with Windows NT ... the list goes on and on! If you would really like to send us an email, you can do so here.

Re: ASDF Help Thread. [Serious]
Yeah, but the drive is encrypted and the password used was the one from that Microsoft account. And the only way to get that password back is to recover to email. The [email protected] one. I don't know, I mostly wrote that out of guilt and desperation after spending hours trying to fix it, but some things you can't fix you can only say sorry and move on. Sorry for bringing this into your forum. Have a good day.atomtengeralattjaro wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 2:22 pmHi!
