FR tho i hate video game styled settings. They are fundamentally incompatible with any sort of suspension of disbelief. Sometimes "good" explanations can be given for the existence of a 'leveling/skill/class system' (though they rarely satisfactorily justify why it aesthetically resembles a video game so damn much), but no matter what it always reverses the very concept of what gaining strength actually means - which means you're left with a power system that inherently lacks a backbone or any sort of proper groundwork. Not to mention that a character who has their power handed down to them is inherently a weak and shaky character, no matter how much male chauvinism you try to pack into them for insecure teenagers to soy at

TL;Dr i've thought about this idea of 'systems' a lot for my own creative writing and come to the conclusion that while it can exist, it's fundamentally degenerate and unsupportive. Basically, it's a poison to even use and you're doomed if you rely on it to grow stronger.

Does this happen a lot? Ah, I guess maybe in anime? The only such system I remember was in dragon ball z (but that was over nine thousand years ago).

its a terribly common feature of Korean webtoons, and a lot of Japanese anime (mainly Isekai but other genres too)

Dragon Ball Z doesnt really count, but its power system is also terrible for other reasons
