It's an ex-tinguisher because it was previously employed as a tinguisher. Which is to say, involved in the process of the guishing of tin.
What is guishing, you ask? Well of course, it is the process by which a material is modified to be guish, or GUI-ish, that is, more closely resemble a graphical user interface (GUI).
Why is it a fire extinguisher, then? Well it was fire that used to be a tin-guisher.
