I found this sadfunny:

Thankfully we're using openssh instead of libssh so I didn't need to update for this latest wonder of a bug.

I was wondering what everyone tech-inclined feels about JSL vs PHP webpages. JSL's syntax is really horrible to look at and work with (imo), but PHP doesn't have quite the same power Java does when it comes to getting stuff done, so I'm really torn on which one to use.

Just trying to get some alternative perspectives on the utility of one vs the other before deciding what I want to use as the basis of a site I'm designing. I'm planning on running the server on a Linux machine, if that makes one choice significantly more complicated than the other.

I'm not sure how you'd use the Japanese Sign Language to make a website...

I've never heard of JSL, don't you mean JSP?
A quick search points to at least three different thigns JSL might mean just in the Java context: Java Service Launcher, Java Simulation Library, or Java Search Library. Wow.

Anyhow, I can't give you any useful info since I kind of dislike both Java and PHP, and am not a web developer. If it were me I'd try using ASP.NET (with mono), just because it would let me code in C# and that's what I'm comfortable with. But in general I just don't like working on websites...

I think your choice should depend on what you're more comfortable with, as well as what kind of complexity you need in server-side logic. You can pull off a ton of stuff with php, but the code might will get messy I guess :)

I did mean JSP, I was posting during a break and my fingers betrayed me

Also ASP is a little off the table for me as I primarily (almost exclusively) use Ubuntu and ASP gets dependent on Microsoft for some stuff. I could probably work around it, but every time I try to work around MS products on my machine it's always a headache so I tend to avoid them whenever possible. Thank you though!

Pronouns: Well it shouldn't really be that complicated if you go over my post history but then... why are you searching through my post history? Don't you think you are over complicating something as simple as just referring to me? Why are you like this? Is it just out of boredom? Does your religion require it? You could just assume them and skip all this paragraph, don't worry an eldritch horror won't appear out of nowhere to eat you (or me for that matter) if you get this wrong, the worst that can happen is I ignore you and even in that case you can try again! There shouldn't be that many options anyway so if you get it wrong the first time try again and again. Bottom line is: you just lost a bunch of time reading this paragraph for something as trivial as figuring out how to refer to me when you could just have deduced it which should make you think your life choices so far.

I'd drop PHP in the toilet hoping to never see it again

I think I enjoyed using it, but I'm not entirely sure if it was the PHP or the AJAX that I actually liked. Either way, JSP is part of my training for my job so I guess I'll wait to work with JSP a little more before I decide

Just learn dependency injection, make your variables final (*ALL YOUR VARIABLES*) and you will be fine

What I'm currently doing at work, .Net Core v3, which seems pretty good. I'm no web developer either though.

Java is pretty good*, not sure about JSP though. How does it compare to using something like React frontend + Java backend?

* Not as good as Kotlin though

this is terrible I love it.

The other day I was trying to explain to a senior dev why it's bad that the last updated timestamp was in the future. I think I might have also been trying to explain that unix time doesn't have timezones.

this is further evidence that timezones were a mistake and should be abolished.

maybe that senior dev was only a senior in the future

anyhow, time is an illusion, but NTP wouldn't tell you that.
